Councilmen call for city backing of measure to expedite homeless housing
Developers could soon skip one of the most arduous parts of any new construction, as long as it’s in the name of emergency homeless shelters and housing projects.
Introduced by Assemblyman Miguel Santiago (D-Los Angeles), Assembly Bill 1197 would exempt Proposition HHH-funded projects, HEAP funded projects, and emergency shelters in the cities that have declared an emergency shelter crisis from environmental review.
Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti declared such a crisis in April of last year. Earlier this week, Los Angeles City Councilman David Ryu spoke in favor of the Assembly Bill.
