Response To Napa Earthquake To Be Reviewed By Assembly Select Committee On Local Emergency Preparedness

For immediate release:

The Assembly Select Committee on Local Emergency Preparedness, chaired by Assemblymember Freddie Rodriguez, will hold an informational hearing on the Napa earthquake at 10:00 AM on Monday, October 20th at the California State Capitol. The hearing will examine the state and local emergency response to the earthquake.

“After any emergency situation, it is important to take stock and review the emergency response to find out what worked well and if there are any gaps that need to be filled,” said Rodriguez. “We were fortunate that the Napa earthquake occurred early in the morning when most people were asleep, but we may not be so lucky with the next earthquake. Now is the time to identify areas of our local and statewide emergency response system that need to be improved to ensure California is protected during the next earthquake.”

The magnitude 6.0 trembler occurred at 3:20 A.M. on August 24th, 2014 and was centered 3 miles northwest of American Canyon in Napa County. According to the Governor’s office, the area has experienced over 120 recorded aftershocks. The earthquake caused significant damage in the region, especially in the cities of Napa and Vallejo.

Expected to give testimony at the hearing are representatives from the city and county of Napa, the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services, Napa city fire and police departments, Queen of the Valley Medical Center and Seismic Warning System-a developer of earthquake early warning systems.
