Assemblymember Freddie Rodriguez announced that Vanessa Covarrubias of Pomona will be the 52nd Assembly District’s recipient of a $1000 scholarship from the California Latino Legislative Caucus Foundation Statewide Scholarship Program.

“Vanessa is a bright, accomplished young woman who has stood out as a leader both academically and in her community,” said Rodriguez. “The Latino Legislative Caucus Foundation Scholarship is a way to give back to our community and help make college a little bit more affordable. I have confidence that Vanessa will do great things.”

Vanessa Covarrubias is a senior at Ganesha High School in Pomona. In addition to her stellar academic record, Vanessa is a leader on her campus. She is a member of the Key Club and National Honor Society; secretary of the Ganesha High School Latina Club and Crew Leader at Bright Prospect, a local college access program based in Pomona that empowers high potential, low-income students to gain admission, succeed and graduate from four-year colleges and universities. Vanessa will begin studying at the University of California, Irvine this fall pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Biological Sciences.

“I genuinely appreciate the California Latino Legislative Caucus Foundation scholarship for the role it has played in helping me become an accomplished individual with a desire to beat the odds,” said Covarrubias. “I will be pursuing a post-secondary degree at the University of California, Irvine in the Biological Sciences department. CLLCF gave me the possibility to pursue a career path that encompasses my personal fight to achieve racial equity in a post-secondary education and make schooling inclusive of all cultures.”

The Foundation awarded $25,000 dollars in scholarship funds to eligible students accepted into an accredited college or university. Over 350 applications were received during this inaugural year of the scholarship program. Scholarship winners were selected based on a rigorous set of standards; including academic performance, personal statements, extracurricular activities, leadership positions held, special awards and honors received, and work history. Winners will each receive a $1,000 scholarship toward their educational needs.

Assemblymember Rodriguez represents the 52nd Assembly District which includes the cities of Chino, Montclair, Ontario, Pomona and portions of unincorporated Fontana.
