Assemblymember Freddie Rodriguez released the following response to the 2016-2017 California State Budget Proposal released by Governor Jerry Brown today:
“The budget proposal released today by Governor Brown is a great start for our work on the Assembly Budget Committee. I applaud Governor Brown’s commitment to securing our financial future and bolstering the State’s Rainy Day Fund by an additional $2 billion.
Ensuring quality education for our children is one of my top priorities and students throughout California continue to benefit, this year receiving $2.8 billion dollars in additional funding. I am also glad to see that this year’s budget proposal does not increase college tuition and includes more money for career technical education- but I think there is still more that needs to be done to ease the burden on community college students.
Although the initial budget proposal is strong, there is still more work to be done in the coming months. As a member of the Assembly Budget Subcommittee on Public Safety, I will be looking closely at the Governor’s public safety allocations to ensure that local law enforcement officials have the resources they need to keep our communities safe.”
