(SACRAMENTO)- Today, Governor Edmund G. Brown unveiled his 2017-18 California State Budget proposals in Sacramento. Assemblymember Freddie Rodriguez, D-Pomona, Chair of the PERSS Committee responded with the following comments on healthcare, transportation, and pensions:
“As Congressional Republicans and the Trump Administration continue to advocate for policies that only hurt the middle class, our work in California must be stronger than ever to protect our values. I applaud Governor Brown for presenting a balanced budget that does just that.
Ensuring quality healthcare through California is a top priority. I support the Governors goals of fully embracing the Affordable Care Act through additional expansion of the Medi-Cal program. Thousands of middle to low income families in my district have benefited from this coverage, leading to more financial security and healthier families.
Crumbling roads and highways are one of the most pressing issues facing our community. In the coming months I look forward to working with my Assembly colleagues to bring money to our local highways and find opportunities to expand public transportation- especially extending the Metro Foothill Gold Line to Montclair.
Pension reform in California has achieved major goals in providing more certainty and security for many in our state and local workforce. Given recent court rulings and reduced revenue forecasts at the largest pension funds, the work undertaken through the budget process and the PERSS (Public Employees, Retirement, and Social Security) Committee to ensure we meet our obligations to current and future retirees will be critical.”
