Assemblymember Freddie Rodriguez Issues Statement on Pomona Police Department Arrest in Murder of Jonah Hwang

For immediate release:

(SACRAMENTO)-  Assemblymember Freddie Rodriguez (D-Pomona) issued the following statement in response to the March 27, 2017 update from Pomona Police Department about an arrest made in connection to the murder of 7-year old Jonah Hwang.

“Over the past several weeks, our community has mourned the murder of Jonah Hwang and decried the senseless act of violence that took him. My thoughts and prayers will continue to remain with his family and loved ones as they seek justice in his name and memory. I hope with this arrest the residents of the neighborhood where these shootings have occurred can finally find some sense of peace and rest.

I have held meetings with the Pomona Police Department Chief of Police and Mayor Tim Sandoval to express my immediate and serious commitment to doing whatever is necessary to ensure our homes and streets are safer. From authoring legislation in Sacramento to holding community meetings, the safety of our community will remain my number one priority.

Our community is still plagued with far too much violence. Our children, families, and loved ones are placed in unnecessary danger because these criminals have little to no regard for the pain and suffering of others, let alone their safety.  I look forward to working with all elected officials in my neighborhoods in renewing our commitment to preventing these senseless acts of violence by strengthening punishments for serious offenders and working to bring economic prosperity to the Inland Empire.”

Assemblymember Freddie Rodriguez and several additional legislators wore superhero socks during an Adjournment in Memory of the State Assembly in honor of Jonah on March 9, 2017. Photos of this event are attached and you can obtain video footage here.
