(SACRAMENTO)- Today, Governor Edmund G. Brown unveiled his 2018-19 California State Budget proposals in Sacramento. Assemblymember Freddie Rodriguez, D-Pomona, Chair of the Public Employees, Retirement, and Social Security Committee responded with the following comments:
“Investing in the voter-approved Rainy Day Fund is important to securing the financial stability of California. I am committed to growing the fund to protect communities like the Inland Empire, which are hardest hit in an economic downturn.
The affordability of housing and education in the Inland Empire and Greater Los Angeles County remains a top concern to the communities I represent. The ticket to a stable middle-class life is through the investment of home ownership and achieving a higher education. This is why I want to protect the Middle-Class Scholarship Act for a large number of students at Cal Poly Pomona who use the program and thousands more around the state. I look forward to supporting programs directed at our Community Colleges by providing free tuition and new online opportunities.
Decades of crumbling roads and highways are one of the most pressing issues facing our community. I hear this every day from my constituents and leaders. As promised in last year’s transportation funding package, this budget focuses on a “fix-it-first” approach to rebuilding infrastructure right in our neighborhoods and communities. I remain committed to working with the Administration to expand public transportation in the 52nd Assembly District - especially extending the second phase Metro Foothill Gold Line to Montclair.
Pension reform in California has achieved major goals in providing more certainty and security for many in our state and local workforce. As these reforms continue to change funded status levels of our systems, the PERSS Committee will continue to work on goals that ensure we meet our obligations to current and future retirees.”
